This weekend there was some instability on the site because of some pronblems on the server. I talked with the hosting and they explained how the server has been overloaded. They have moved some resource eater websites elsewhere and hope it will not be repeated.
I don’t blame these guys; I think it’s just a matter of evolution. More people who used to have just a static html page are finding out that they need to utilise the power of php and mysql. That puts more load on the server that wasn’t there before.
I know they do their best to add servers and keep the loads down, and I’m sure that if we are patient, they will get the loads down. They will move some folks or some one will go to vps or dedicated servers, and that will free up some capacity. We have to realise that no hosting company knows beforhand which user will have a lot of usage and which ones will have just a little, or who will be using mysql tommorw that wasn’t using it today.
I think it will be harder and harder to keep the load balanced on a shared server as it becomes more and more critical to put all the bells and whistles on every site. A shared server that is sweet today could become cloged down tommorow and then the inevitable lag between clogging up and getting unclogged.
