Nokia’s seven new mobile phones  

Nokia introduced seven new handsets under the heading “Simple Pleasures.” Four new slide phones were revealed, including the 3G-enabled Nokia 6280 for WCDMA markets, and the Nokia 6265, Nokia’s most feature-filled CDMA model to date. Additionally, Nokia introduced two folding designs and a traditional monoblock design. All seven models are expected to begin shipping in the second half of 2005.

Bridges and buildings with ’sense’  

Imagine a bridge that’s able to self-diagnose cracks or a building able to assess its own health after an earthquake, without any help from humans.

Networks of wireless sensors embedded in buildings, roads, bridges and other infrastructure hold that promise. In the first large-scale field test of the technology, University of Michigan researchers in conjunction with Stanford University and the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology found that a wireless network of 14 sensors performed as well as traditional cabled-based monitoring systems.

Double-gate transistor model  

Development of the industry’s first double-gate transistor model has been announced by IC maker Freescale Semiconductor Inc., Austin TX, and the University of Florida, Gainesville FL.

It has been used to model a device that Freescale calls FinFET, a transistor engineered to pack more computing power into less space and reduce power consumption, while using existing semiconductor manufacturing processes, the company says.

Jeep Compass Spy Shots  

AutoWeek has posted some spy shots of the upcoming Jeep Compass crossover. Nothing else new is really mentioned; the Compass will still share a platform with the Dodge Caliber. What is interesting news is AutoWeek’s estimated price for the new Chrysler products (only Chrysler cars are called “products”).

Seattle; The most unwired American city  

Seattle is now the most unwired city in America, according to Intel Corporation’s third annual “Most Unwired Cities” survey released today.
In a rapidly changing wireless landscape, Seattle narrowly unseated former top position holders San Francisco (2004’s Most Unwired City) and Portland , Ore. (2003’s Most Unwired City ). Seattle-area residents can now stay connected, informed and entertained throughout the city, from the original Starbucks at Pike Place Market and the Bank of America Tower to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the Space Needle.

Rapid-reaction gas pedal  

Gas and brake pedals have to react quickly and reliably if the occupants of the vehicle are not to be unnecessarily endangered. Engineers have developed a 3D magnetic sensor which digitally registers the pedal deflection by its angle. BMW is currently testing the system.
