A New Phase in Medical Imaging  

Performed by researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France, this work may help make practical new medical applications, such as the ability to detect cancerous breast tissue directly, rather than the hard-tissue calcifications that are produced in later stages of the disease. The new x-ray demonstration appears in the 8 August issue of Optics Express, an open-access journal published by the Optical Society of America.

Goldfich Catching Robot  

Catching goldfish might seem like child’s play but, for a net-wielding robot, it is an extremely challenging task.

The goldfish-grabbing bot, known as “Poipoi”, was developed by researchers at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), in central Japan. It has been entered into an annual goldfish catching competition for children, which takes place in nearby Yamatokoriyama, on 20 August.

Health Benefits of Strawberry  

Strawberries may be the most effective of the five most commonly consumed berries at eliminating cancer cells, according to a recent study conducted at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. The center recently tested extracts of six berries — strawberries, raspberries, black raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and cranberries — to determine their ability to induce apoptosis, a process that ends cancer cells.
