The summer is over. One of the several regrets is that you must wait for some summer sports till next year, for example beach volleyball; what a pity! I decided to post some photos from women’s Beach Volleyball here. before that lets have a look on a short history of this attractive sport:
In early 1920’s most accounts place the sport’s origin in Santa Monica, California, where the first Volleyball courts were put up on the beach at the Playground (Santa Monica).
In 1927 Beach volleyball became the principal sport in a French nudist camp founded in Franconville (France).
In 1930 first two-man beach volleyball game was played in Santa Monica, California.
In 1947 first official two-man beach tournament was held, at State Beach in California.
In 1948 first tournament held in California (Los Angeles), awarded the best teams with a case of Pepsi as the winners’ prize.
In 1950’s Beach volleyball became an entertainment show and Beauty Contests were included in the official program.
In 1960’s the first Manhattan Beach Open took place.
In 1974 first commercially sponsored tournament took place in San Diego.
In 1978 Jose Cuervo Tequila enters as sport’s first major sponsor.
In 1987 Men’s Beach Volleyball World Championships held for first time.
In 1993 Women’s World Championship Series initiated. Later in September 21st, the International Olympic Committee grants Beach Volleyball Olympic medal status.
