Intel Extends Embedded Sector Commitment

Extended lifecycle support for Core Duo processors used by developers of embedded computer-based systems has been provided by chip giant Intel Corp., Santa Clara CA. Target markets include industrial control, test and instrumentation, aerospace, defense and medical imaging.

Intel says the processors balance performance with power efficiency and support general purpose and special purpose functionality in embedded applications.

Two independent processing cores can support multiple operating systems simultaneously to provide design–flexibility for custom applications. A full set of software tools, including compilers, performance analyzers and thread checkers, assist developers in maximizing application performance and fully exploiting concurrent threading.

Technology enables the system to dynamically regulate power to cores, caches and interconnects in response to changing processing requirements. The processor is supported by the Mobile 945GM Express Chipset, which provides enhanced graphics, I/O bandwidth, storage speed and reliability for embedded system designs.

“Embedded system developers walk a tight–rope, balancing delivery of higher–performing systems against power envelope restrictions,” Ton Steenman, Intel general manager, Infrastructure Processor Division, says. “Intel Core Duo processors are bringing the benefits of power efficient, multi–core processing to bear to help developers offer greater performance, innovation and capability in their embedded solutions.”
