DC/DC Converter which minimizes PCB footprint

Providing design engineers with a robust 2 watt device suitable for high temperature environments, TT electronics BI Technologies Electronic Components Division has developed a fixed output DC/DC converter with a wide input voltage range. The 831 Series DC/DC converter eliminates heat sink requirements and is packaged in a small, space saving hybrid SIP configuration (1″ long x 0.5″ high x 0.225″ thick) that minimizes PC board footprint.

According to Mike Ochoa-Hougan, hybrid product manager for BI Technologies Electronic Components Division, the efficient design of the converter makes it robust, economical and easy to use for design engineers who need to add logic-level power for control circuitry in commercial electromechanical systems. “The converter uses a ceramic base and hybrid technology to virtually eliminate any external heat sink requirements, thus reducing the overall installed cost of the device,” Ochoa-Hougan said. “All the device requires is two external capacitors.”

The 831 Series devices feature a wide input voltage range, tight load regulation, and current limit protection, yielding a versatile POL DC/DC converter, Ochoa-Hougan continued.

The DC/DC converters are ideal for commercial applications with a need for a point-of-load source of low-voltage power for control circuitry.

The 2W devices feature a fixed output voltage of 5V (3.3V available) at up to 400mA, and an input voltage range of 12VDC to 32VDC. Line regulation is 1.0% (measured at 16V to 32V at 400mA) with load regulation of 1.0% (at 100mA to 400mA). Operating temperature is -10°C to +70°C. BI Technologies will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.

The 9-pin DC/DC converter measures 1.0 inch long and 0.5 inch high, and is 0.225 inch thick, with typical lead spacing of 0.10 inch. The converter can also be vertically or horizontally mounted.

Typical pricing for the 831 Series converters is approximately $4.00 in medium range volumes, with lead times from stock to 8 weeks.
