Mini Robots to Undertake Major Tasks

The MICRON project team, led by the Institute for Process Control and Robotics (IPR), Karlsruhe, Germany, brought together eight international partners. Funded under the European Commission’s FET (Future and Emerging Technologies) initiative of the IST programme, MICRON set out to build a total of five to ten micro robots, just cubic centimetres in size.

Robot Moved by a Slime Mould’s Fears

A bright yellow slime mould that can grow to several metres in diameter has been put in charge of a scrabbling, six-legged robot. The Physarum polycephalum slime, which naturally shies away from light, controls the robot’s movement so that it too keeps out of light and seeks out dark places in which to hide itself.

Dinosaur Robot “Pleo”

Designers and engineers studied the Camarasaurus, a dinosaur from the Jurassic period in order to create Pleo, a recreation born from that study. The robotic dinosaur’s physiology was developed from the fossils of the original. Pleo is a designer species that incorporates the traits of autonomous life. He is engineered to mimic life and relate to his owner on a personal level.

Better Robot Design

Civil engineers design structures such as buildings and bridges using mathematical formulas, or theorems, that deal with the science of statics. Mechanical engineers designing robots, machinery and mechanisms use their own set of theorems dealing with kinematics, or the science of motion.

New algorithm improves robot vision

“Many people have said that depth estimation from a single monocular image is impossible,” says computer science Assistant Professor Andrew Ng, who will present a paper on his research at the Neural Information Processing Systems Conference in Vancouver Dec. 5-8. “I think this work shows that in practical problems, monocular depth estimation not only works well, but can also be very useful.”

Camel Racing Camels

Robots, designed in Switzerland, riding camels in the Arabian desert. Camel jockey robots, about 2 feet high, with a right hand to bear the whip and a left hand to pull the reins. Thirty-five pounds of aluminum and plastic, a 400-MHz processor running Linux and communicating at 2.4 GHz; GPS-enabled, heart rate-monitoring (the camel’s heart, that is) robots.
